The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family, tradition and togetherness – and this year, our students had the opportunity to explore the story and traditions behind this important celebration as part of our school community.
Led by Ms Sindy, our IB1 students took center stage, sharing the history and significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival with their peers and teachers.
Learning the Story Behind the Festival
The students explored the traditions and stories that have shaped the festival over generations, helping everyone understand the cultural meaning behind a celebration that is enjoyed across Singapore and throughout Asia.
For our students, it was more than simply learning about a festival. Presenting to their peers gave them an opportunity to develop their communication skills, share their knowledge and engage others in an important aspect of Chinese culture.
Discovering the Art of Chinese Tea
The celebration also introduced students to the art of the Chinese tea ceremony.
Students learned about the traditions and rituals surrounding tea, gaining an appreciation for the care, patience and attention to detail involved in the ceremony.
It was a hands-on way to experience a cultural tradition – turning learning from something we read about into something we could see, participate in and enjoy together.
Mooncakes, Tea and Community
Of course, no Mid-Autumn celebration would be complete without mooncakes.
Following the student presentations and tea ceremony, everyone came together to enjoy traditional mooncakes and Chinese tea.
It was a simple but meaningful opportunity for our community to pause, connect and celebrate together.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Westbourne College (Singapore), we believe that education extends beyond academic subjects. Understanding different cultures and traditions helps students develop curiosity, cultural awareness and a broader perspective on the world around them.
Events such as our Mid-Autumn Festival celebration allow students to take an active role in sharing knowledge and traditions, while bringing our community together through shared experiences.
